So, I did one of those things where you buy the big bag of sweet potatoes and put them in the depths of the pantry because the bag is so massive and then proceed to forget about it. Thankfully, I remembered these sweet potatoes before they went bad, so I decided to make my own sweet potato dog treats for Rhubarb!

I had made other dried dog treats, like these Chicken Jerky Strips, so I used that as my starting point. And it worked! These dehydrated sweet potato treats are super simple to make and only require one ingredient – sweet potatoes!

Grab your baking sheet and wire rack and let’s get dehydrating!

Ingredients for Dehydrated Sweet Potatoes

To make these dehydrated sweet potato dog treats, you just need a baking sheet, a wire rack, and a tasty sweet potato!

Sweet Potato: The star of the show! Sweet potatoes are a great way to make natural chewy treats for your dog because they are cheap and the high fiber content means they develop a tough texture when dried. This tough texture is great for your dog’s teeth and to keep them entertained. Bonus? Sweet potatoes are also healthy for dogs, containing a bunch of vitamins and minerals!

How to make Dehydrated Sweet Potato dog treats

To make these dried sweet potato dog treats, you just need a baking sheet, a wire rack, and a couple of hours with an oven. And even though a couple of hours seems like a long time, this time in the oven is critical to creating a chew-resistant treat.

Step 1: Cut
Slice the sweet potato into ¼ inch thick pieces using a sharp chef’s knife.

Step 2: Rack
Place sliced sweet potato onto a wire cooling rack that’s set on top of a baking sheet. This will allow air to circulate around the sweet potatoes while they cook, drying them out from every angle.

Step 3: Dry
Set on the middle rack of a 225°F (107°C) oven. Cook for 2 to 3 hours, flipping the potato pieces over after an hour until the potato is very dry and a bit crispy. (The longer they bake, the longer they will keep stored because the moisture will be lower).

Recipe Tips

Variations: You can cut sweet potatoes any way you like and then bake them as noted in the recipe. While we did round shapes here, you could cut them into strips for more jerky-like sweet potato chews for dogs.

Storage: These can be stored covered loosely at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. If they dry out longer in the oven, they will keep longer at room temperature too. Just be sure to label them with a date so you can remember when they will go bad.
